Impartial budget tool

This tool is designed to help homeowners, architects, interior designers, developers, and property professionals gain a realistic understanding of the investment required to design, deliver, and support a beautifully integrated, high-performance home technology system.

Below, you'll find guidance on how the calculator works, what it’s intended for, and how best to use it as part of your early-stage planning.

Why We Use the HTA Budget Calculator

1. Impartiality and Transparency
Created by the Home Technology Association—a respected, independent third party - the calculator is openly accessible via our website. That means anyone can use it, and everyone sees the same baseline figures. It brings clarity to what can otherwise be a complex and opaque process.

2. Accuracy Backed by Industry Expertise
The tool has been developed using real-world data from leading home technology professionals across the US and UK. It’s far more comprehensive and accurate than any calculator we could build in isolation, and provides a reliable starting point for meaningful budget conversations.

What the Calculator Is - and Isn't

The calculator is not a quote - it's designed to give you a broad-brush cost and help you see the effect of adding and removing certain elements, and the range of systems available.

Just as a builder can’t quote for a building without drawings, or a designer can’t cost a scheme without design development, we can’t provide a fixed price for home technology without going through a structured design process.

Our job is to understand your lifestyle, your priorities, and your budget—and to guide you through the choices in a way that makes sense. We’ll help you identify where it’s worth investing, where you can streamline, and how to design a technology solution that fits beautifully into your home and your life.

Understanding the Range

You’ll notice the estimated costs can span a very large range - that’s intentional, and an inherent part of the process.
The difference between the low and high ends reflects the level of choice available within every category of technology, and this can often be significantly greater than first imagined.
For instance:

  • A 55” TV might cost anywhere between £300 and £3,000

  • Lighting keypads can range from £200 to over £1,000 for a bespoke or custom finish

  • Ceiling speakers vary from £500 to over £5,000

  • Window treatments might be a £1,000 for a simple automated blind or £5,000 for a bespoke motorised curtain pole solution

It’s a bit like comparing an entry-level car to the flagship model - a Mercedes A-Class to a Mercedes Maybach S-Class for example.
Both are great options - just designed for different needs, priorities, and tastes.
