Inside Manchester’s Most Sophisticated (and High Tech) Tower Mill Conversion with 'Design Masters' Peter Grech

Luxurious Smart Apartment in the City

Nestled above the vibrant cityscape of Manchester, a historic tower mill has been quietly reimagined into a sanctuary of intelligent living and design precision.

Beautiful, Multifunctional Spaces

While its industrial shell stands proud, what lies within is a testament to modern luxury — a home where technology enhances every detail without disrupting its soul.

Designed by acclaimed interior architect Peter Grech, and brought to life in collaboration with SONA, this home proves that smart technology and heritage architecture can not only coexist — they can elevate one another.

Arrival & Hallways: Curves, Craft, and Control

From the moment you step inside, the home’s unique character is apparent. The curved structure of the mill is celebrated rather than concealed — with brass mesh balustrades, sculpted wood veneer ceiling arcs, and complex curved handrails flowing through the levels like art installations.

But look closer, and you'll notice:

Lighting responds at the touch of a button, with intuitive Lutron keypads discreetly embedded into the walls — allowing moods and scenes to be set effortlessly from the entrance upward, welcoming the homeowners as they enter.

You’ll also find lighting details flowing both up and down the staircase — a soft, low-level glow that subtly illuminates the architectural curve, guiding movement whilst emphasising the home’s continuous, sculptural flow.

Kitchen/Diner: Form Meets Function

The heart of the home is its curved kitchen and dining space, designed to host, gather, and impress — all while remaining understated. Every material choice is tactile and tailored:

  • Smoked eucalyptus cabinetry below

  • Liquid metal finishes above

  • A concealed appliance garage hides behind the marble splashback for visual clarity

  • A brass and marble lighting liner runs above, anchoring the space with warmth

But it’s what you don’t notice that also elevates this space:

  • High quality lighting creates a gallery-like atmosphere
  • Motorised curtains glide silently along plaster-in tracks controlled with bronze keypads or remote controls that also control the audio/visual elements
  • In-ceiling speakers deliver background music or immersive sound — all controlled from your phone or remote for total ease and enjoyment

Height, Harmony and Hidden Technology

This double height space is the centrepiece of the Tower Mill penthouse — a place to relax, host, and admire. At first glance:

In this space SONA worked with Peter and the bespoke cabinetry company (Atelier Bespoke) to create a TV cleverly integrated into the curve of the staircase

A hidden dry bar tucked into the joinery ensures this room is perfectly set up for relaxing evenings after work in the city with a cocktail or two.

Once immersed in the space you can enjoy

SONOS 5:1 surround is fully integrated into furniture and staircase with SONANCE in-ceiling speakers that vanish into the ceiling

Orluna lighting has been carefully chosen to highlight key interior details — offering not only visual precision, but also supporting wellness through high-quality, low-glare, and circadian-friendly illumination. Its warm, natural tones enhance materials and textures while creating a calm, comfortable environment throughout the day.

Motorised curtains open and close in unison with sunrise, movie night, or your morning coffee - essential yet beautiful control that compliments the ceiling height.

Without motorised curtains it would be very awkward and time-consuming to get the curtains to opened/closed daily and styled in unison. Automation makes this effortless.

This is technology that disappears — until you need it.

Cinema Room: A Private Screening Experience

Our favourite hidden surprise tucked below the roof terrace is a stunning lounge with 360 degree views of Manchester - designed for both relaxation AND drama. This room can be used as a day lounge for reading or listening to music or alternatively can be transformed in to a private cinema room! Think

Movie Mode activates and curtains envelope the room as if from nowhere. Motorised roller blinds and curved curtain tracks darken the space as a 5:1 TV and soundbar setup takes over. Even the skylight closes automatically to perfect the atmosphere.

Heritage Reimagined Through Innovation

This tower mill isn’t just a conversion — it’s a case study in how smart living can enhance, not erase, architectural history. Through meticulous design by Peter Grech, and the seamless technology integration by SONA, this home captures what luxury city living in Manchester should be: intelligent, understated, and deeply personal.
