What Can We Look Forward to in 2021?

January 4, 2021

No doubt about it, 2021 has been a challenging year for most – whether it’s work uncertainty, not seeing our families, or worrying about our health.

But times are changing. There’s a new entrant in the Oval Office, the vaccine has been rolled out, and we might finally hear less of the B-word! Whether you’re staying in or making up for lost time next year, here are a few things to look forward to in 2021.

The Friends team are reuniting

Yes, you read that correct – after years of speculation, and an incredible 17 years after the show came to an end, the Friends cast are reuniting in 2021. Like many events planned for 2020, this one was pushed back from May, but it will be worth the wait.

Rather than a return to our favourite catchphrases, or seeing what Ben and Emma look like as grown-ups, the cast will be gathering to reminisce as actors – not in character. Expect plenty of laughs and behind-the-scenes secrets as Matthew Perry, Courtney Cox, Jennifer Aniston, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc and Lisa Kudrow return to our screens on HBO in March.

We were on a break…for sport

Though the latter months of 2020 have seen the return of the Premier League and Formula One to name but two, we have missed out on many sporting events this year. In a show of true sportsmanship, we’re seeing quadrennial events coming back after being rescheduled from 2020:

  • The Tokyo Olympics will see 339 events across 50 disciplines coming to our screens from Friday 23rd Expect to see 206 nations battling it out for gold medals – and this time, we only have to wait three years for the Olympics in Paris!
  • Like the Olympics, the delayed Euros will kick off at Rome’s Stadio Olimpico in 2021, beginning on June 11th with Turkey versus Italy. For the first time, the event will see games taking place all over Europe, including Baku, Rome, Parken, St Petersburg and more.

On top of these two showstopping events, we also have the return of Wimbledon to look forward to from June 28th. 2020 was the first year that has seen Wimbledon cancelled since World War II!

If we’re to believe what Anthony Joshua said earlier on in December, there could also be a highly anticipated boxing match on the cards in 2021. The world heavyweight champion allegedly wants to “take the head off Tyson Fury’s shoulders” – promising huge viewing figures for this potentially historic boxing event.

Big leaps for home tech

If the idea of watching all that sport on your home cinema wasn’t enough, you’ll love the new developments that are coming in 2021. With the advent of 5G, we’re going to see a seismic shift in IoT support, which promises great things for home tech devices such as voice-controlled assistants. We may even see Bluetooth and WiFi joining forces, making the home all the more connected.

We could also see 2K security cameras, and potentially 4K retina screens for tablet devices. Even Apple is predicted to make headway in home security camera systems.

A push towards sustainability

We’ve all witnessed a renewed focus on sustainability in 2020, and for 2021, the entire EU (including the UK, despite the changes) is looking to implement a ban on single-use plastics. This will cut down on waste dramatically and result in cleaner oceans, less harm to wildlife, and less of a harmful impact on the planet.

Lost in space

While we’re innovating for home tech and sustainability, we’re also making waves off Planet Earth. Expect to see a new exploration of Mars on February 18th as NASA deploys a parachute to the planet. You can watch it live on the NASA YouTube channel.

We’ll also see a ‘blood moon’ on May 26th, which will be visible over the western US, Hawaii, New Zealand, Australia and Japan – or on YouTube if we’re lucky.
