Get the family involved
Turning Disney classics into live-action remakes continues in the new decade. This year, it’s time for Mulan to rise up. Starring Yifei Liu as the eponymous Mulan, it tells the story of a young Chinese maiden disguising herself to save her father. It will hit the big screens on March 27.
Sequels and spin-offs are in no short supply this year, with Minions: The Rise of Gru coming to cinemas in July. Expect Steve Carell to reprise his role, while The Croods returns for its second instalment. This time, the prehistoric family have a rival clan to battle!
A piece of the action
Nothing sums up an action movie quite like the James Bond franchise. In his departing role, Daniel Craig returns as 007. In No Time to Die, the agent has left active service, but soon has to return to his old tricks when a CIA friend re-emerges.
Doing it for the girl bosses is Scarlett Johansson, whose starring role in Marvel’s Black Widow will be released this May. We’ll also see Harley Quinn splitting off from the Joker in Bird of Prey: And the Fantabulous Emancipation of Harley Quinn.
For gratuitous good fun, don’t forgot the ever-enduring Fast & Furious franchise returns with the imaginatively named Fast & Furious 9! If that’s not enough for you, Top Gun: Maverick will see Tom Cruise reprising his role in July.
All things spooky
Ghouls and monsters will be a recurring theme in 2020, with everything from vampires to a Ghostbusters reboot. After the ill-fated 2016 instalment, Ghostbusters: Afterlife looks back on the 80s classic from the team’s grandchildren’s perspective. It stars Stranger Things’ Finn Wolfhard and was written by Dan Aykroyd, so expect big things!
Following in the footsteps of Alien vs. Predator or Freddie vs. Jason, Godzilla will take on Kong in November 2020, this time starring another Stranger Things graduate, Millie Bobby Brown. For something less kid-friendly, Michael Myers returns in Halloween Kills. Jamie Lee Curtis will reprise her role this October, while Friday the 13th – and even Robocop – will both make returns.
Something a little lighter
Feeling a little overwhelmed by all the action? Ryan Reynolds provides some comic relief in Free Guy, a story about a man with a regular job who realises he’s trapped in one big video game. If you’re really into old school movies, you might remember Coming to America, released back in 1988. Some three decades later, Eddie Murphy is back as Prince Akeem – only this time, he has a long-lost son.
Speaking of old school, Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure has got a 2020 reboot. This time, Bill & Ted Face the Music sees the two as ageing rockers, still trying to fulfil their dreams of saving the world. Will it work out for Keanu? Find out in August!
