Hidden tech, eye-opening results: integrated luxury home

A home technology enthusiast came to us with a second project: to turn their Alderley Edge home into a fully integrated setup without compromising the aesthetic.

Some clients come to us with a carte blanche approach – they trust us to offer them the best technology to the highest industry standards. Others have a clearer idea of what they want, which was the case for this client in Alderley Edge.

The homeowner had already experienced the benefits of luxury home technology in another property. Our job was to turn this modest Cheshire home into a fully customisable haven, complete with audio, lighting and security.

No stone unturned

Our brief was clear: to integrate every smart system within the house, using an intuitive, user-friendly interface. This would comprise lighting, blinds and curtains, video, stereo, and two home cinemas.

But first, we needed to work with what we already had. The property benefited from CCTV, an electric gate and door entry system, as well as motorised garage doors. For enhanced security, we installed one single point of control. They can now lock and unlock all the doors in their home at the touch of a button, while they can also view their CCTV feeds directly on their iPads.

Complementing the décor

The home also features bright and airy magnolia décor, which we sought to underscore with an integrated lighting system. We installed fully customisable Lutron lighting, allowing the homeowner to change colours in different rooms depending on the mood they wanted to capture.

To complement the lighting, we also delivered motorised blinds and curtains. These would be guided by natural light outdoors – adjusting to open slowly in time with the rising of the morning sun. With its bright interior, we wanted to make the most of natural light in the property where possible.

Maintaining the aesthetic

The home featured a charming rustic décor, so we wanted to maintain this while offering the benefits of modern tech. In every room except the home cinema, we installed ‘hidden televisions’, which have been integrated into mirror frames. The gym is a notable example, with a mounted customer mirror covering an entire wall and concealing a 65” TV. These screens are only visible when in use.

We applied similar thinking to the audio distribution. Concealed in-ceiling speakers have been added throughout the house, save for the formal living room and home cinema. In these rooms, we have wall speaker systems that have been colour-matched to the décor.

A home from home

The home cinema/media room goes against the grain somewhat with a television screen in plain sight. Again, subtle lowlights add to the ambience. We’ve also added high-definition video and stereo audio distribution throughout, all controllable through mobile devices.

All screens and audio devices are playable throughout the home with in-ceiling and in-wall speakers. Thanks to the versatile SONOS system, the homeowner can stream music content and play it in every room of the house.

Though the property may be small, it’s a testament to just what integrated technology can do – from pumping up a gym workout to winding down in an indoor pool. Our blend of contemporary and traditional ticked every box for the client. We were also thrilled to be the finalist in two categories at the 2015 CEDIA Awards – for Best Dressed Rack and Best Integrated home.
